Loy Krathong 2010
Loi Krathong takes
place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai
lunar calendar. In the western calendar this usually falls in November."Loi"
means "to float" and a "krathong" is traditionally
made from a section of banana tree trunk. During the night of the full
moon, Thais will float their krathong on a river, canal or a pond lake. The
festival is believed to originate in an ancient practice of paying respect to
the spirit of the waters. This festival is celebrated every year on 21 November
.
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on Sunday (21 November 2010) celebrated the Loy Krathong festival and floated their krathongs on the Chao Phraya River.Thai people across the country on Sunday also enjoyed celebrating the Loy Krathong festival and floating krathongs or hand-made rafts into the rivers to drift away their bad luck. The full moon festival filled night skies, illuminating the darkness in Chiang Mai where hundreds of traditional hot-air balloons were released into the sky of the northern city.
Being in Thailand for the first time, I enjoyed the Loi Krathong festival celebrated in SJMIS on Friday-19 November. I also get familiar with the Thai culture.
