Festival of Diwali
Diwali is a festival of lights. For many Hindus,
Diwali is New Year’s Eve. Diwali is celebrated with a
variety of rituals, which depend in large part on one's location, but they
center on the lighting of candles, electric lights and fireworks.
Diwali is associated with the Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth. It is the
day when Lakshmi is supposed to have emerged from the milky ocean to bring
prosperity to the world. People wear their best
clothes or buy new ones, children are given presents and New Year greetings are
exchanged through visits or Diwali cards. This festival of Diwali was also
celebrated at SJMIS on 9 November 2010.
